Motherwell take on Hamilton in the Scottish Premiership at Fir Park in a match that proves that last season’s form book can be thrown out the window.
Ian Baraclough’s side broke into Europe last year, having finished second in the table, with only the might of Celtic denying them their first league title since 1932. But this campaign has been a desperately different story.
The North Lanarkshire club sit second bottom in the table, only one point above St Mirren, and on course for the relegation play-off potentially including Rangers and Hibernian.
Worryingly for the home side, it was that same play-off structure that gave Hamilton their place in the top flight, as they defeated Hibs on penalties in the final last season.
The Accies have been the surprise package of this campaign, having only come up last year. Formerly, under the guidance of Alex Neil – who is now leading Norwich’s promotion push – and now, Martin Canning, Hamilton have moved into the top half of the table, and look good to remain there once the mid-season split occurs.
The two sides have met twice this season, with Motherwell being on the receiving end of a thumping on both occasions. A 4-0 defeat in September was followed up by a 5-0 thrashing in January.
