The manager has been criticised this season for some of his team selections, and the style of football that he has been playing at Old Trafford, with the use of Marouane Fellaini as a target man having especially perturbed some supporters.

However his counterpart does not agree with some of the criticism aimed at the 63-year-old, and even thinks that he could emulate Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rodgers said: “I don’t think there is any convincing (required). He has shown over his career that he is a top-class manager. He will have seen, coming into this country for the first time, the challenges of this football – it is why it is the most competitive league in the world.

“The Premier League is different from the leagues he will have worked in before but I don’t think you can argue with his credentials. There is no question about the philosophies he has put in place at Ajax or Barcelona or his achievements and when he leaves Manchester United he will still be one of the great managers.”

The Reds play against the Mancunian side on Sunday knowing that with a win they leapfrog United to go in to fourth place. Having not conceded for their last six games, they are in exactly the right kind of form for the big match.
