Here is how United’s players got on:

GK- David De Gea 6

Didn’t have much to do, but should have done better with Sturridge’s goal despite the slight deflection.

RB- Antonio Valencia 6

Solid performance from Valencia, after a tough few weeks.

CB- Chris Smalling 7

Decent display from the England defender. He was a strong influence on the defence.

CB- Phil Jones 6

Booked for a challenge on Jordan Henderson, but played well alongside Smalling.

LB- Daley Blind 7

Looked assured adapting to left-back, instead of a more usual central role.

CM- Michael Carrick 7

Dictated much of the play, and looked a calming influence.

CM- Ander Herrera 7

Made the assist for the opening goal, and generally did quite well.

RW- Juan Mata 9

Scored both the goals, the second of which was a wonderful finish from the Spaniard.

AM- Marouane Fellaini 6

Proved to be a handful for the Liverpool defence, especially in the air, but was better against Tottenham.

LW- Ashley Young 6

Worked hard all game, and seems to be experiencing a slight change of style under van Gaal.

ST- Wayne Rooney 6

Will have been majorly disappointed that he couldn’t end his goal drought at Anfield, but at least it had no impact on the result.

Subs

Angel Di Maria 7

Came on ten minutes into the second half, and provided the assist for the second goal, with a lovely pass.

Radamel Falcao 6

Introduced too late to make a real impact on the game his side were winning.
