The Reds had been hoping to sign the 26-year-old as they look to bolster their midfield with captain Steven Gerrard leaving in the summer. However, they will now have to look elsewhere after being turned down by the German.

This could have been a great deal for the Merseyside club. With his contract ending next year, Stindl was available for his buy out clause of just £2.2 million. This is cheap for a player who has managed six goals and two assists in 14 Bundesliga games this season.

Brendan Rodgers has a job on his hands looking for a replacement for Anfield legend Steven Gerrard though current vice-captain Jordan Henderson is looking good to fill in for the departing skipper.
