Reports suggest defence is a priority for the Dutchman for next season, with some big names linked in a number of different roles for the club’s backline, with the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw seemingly identified as weak points in the team at the moment.

Other exciting targets are in United’s sights as the summer approaches, with these seven seemingly the main players being looked at by the Red Devils at the moment…

1) Paul Pogba (Juventus)

One of the best young players in the world, Juventus starlet Paul Pogba is being strongly linked with United again after some fantastic form this season. Let go by the club earlier in his career, the Frenchman has risen to stardom with Juve, and is also wanted by Chelsea in a potential £44m deal this summer.

2) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

A world class defender, Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels is another big name on United’s radar who could make a real difference to the team next season. The German international will surely be available after a highly disappointing season from Dortmund in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

3) Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

A right-back in top form in the Premier League this season, Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne could be another great buy for United in what has been something of a problem position this term.

4) Danilo (Porto)

Another player being considered by United is Porto starlet Danilo, though rumour has it Real Madrid may have already won the race for his signature.

5) Dani Alves (Barcelona)

Yet another option at right-back is Barcelona’s Dani Alves, who is no doubt tempting due to being available on a free transfer at the end of this season after letting his deal run down.

6) Memphis Depay (PSV)

An exciting youngster who could bring something different to United’s attack, Memphis Depay is likely to leave PSV and has long been touted as a favourite of Louis van Gaal’s.

7) Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

Finally, AS Roma’s injury-prone midfield playmaker Kevin Strootman is also being considered by United, perhaps as an alternative to priority midfield target Paul Pogba.
