The German international, currently with Borussia Dortmund, has proven to be a solid performer in the Bundesliga, and was also a key part of the German national team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil last summer.

Still, some unnamed figures at United are concerned by the player’s lack of pace, with other defensive options supposedly still being considered ahead of the next transfer market.

The Mail also claims that Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte is another name on Louis van Gaal’s wish-list, though the 20-year-old would likely prove expensive for a player his age.

It is claimed that Bilbao would want United to pay Laporte’s full £30m release clause if they are to bring him to Old Trafford next season.
