The 35-year-old put pen-to-paper on a new one year deal with the current Premier League leaders early in the week, a reward for his consistent performances this season, which has seen the Blues open up a six-point gap at the top of the table.

Terry also scored the opening goal at Wembley in Chelsea’s 2-0 Capital One cup win against Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the month, taking his total of trophies won as the captain of the club to 14.

In his long career with the West London outfit, many central defenders have come and gone. some have proved to be very successful, while others have been a disaster, we list Terry’s five best partners.

5) Gary Cahill

Chelsea’s current first choice centre-back pairing, not quite as good to be higher, but certainly good enough to make the top five. A big part of the current league leaders excellent defensive record.

Will most likely end up with the league title this season.

4) Frank Leboeuf

The French world cup winner only played 21 times with Terry but is said to have been a massive influence for him coming through the ranks.

3) William Gallas

A forgotten partnership by many, mainly because Gallas played at full back following the arrival of Ricardo Carvalho in the summer of 2004, but in truth this partnership was very solid and once went 16 games without conceding.

An impressive feat.

2) Marcel Desailly

Someone who Terry has said he looked up to in the past, he played 96 times with the French world cup winner and ended up succeeding him as captain in 2004.

1) Ricardo Carvalho

One of the best central defensive partnerships in Premier League history let alone at Chelsea, these two complemented each other so well and were able to achieve great success together.

Three league titles and three FA cups is not bad…
