It is well-known that Pope Francis is a big fan of reigning Copa Libertadores champions San Lorenzo. However, since he took office in the Vatican more than two years ago he has not been able to follow his team as regularly as he used to do when he was still living in Buenos Aires.

Nonetheless, he claims that he is always abreast of the latest news emanating from the club. He proved his point during a public hearing last week while he was meeting guests with the president of the Argentinean Consumers Union, who is also a fan of San Lorenzo.

A member of the audience asked him about San Lorenzo’s 3-1 derby win over Huracan and the Pope responded with a smile – saying “Sigamos pinchando globos” (translated as “Let’s keep popping balloons”) – a reference to Huracan’s nickname, ‘The Balloon’.

San Lorenzo are currently second in the Primera A with 15 points from 6 games. Huracan are languishing in 17th.
