In early March it was reported in the Daily Mirror that the Gunners are set to welcome back the injured trio of Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Debuchy and Jack Wilshere at a crucial time in the season.

A top-two finish is a possibility and they remain on course to retain the FA Cup, with Championship side Reading standing in their way of another Wembley appearance in May.

But out of the three returning players, who is most likely to have the biggest impact on the North London side’s campaign? The team are in great form at the moment and none are guaranteed a place in the starting line-up.

3) Mathieu Debuchy

Appearances: 14

Goals: 1

The former Newcastle United defender was brought in to replace Bacary Sagna who joined Manchester City on a free transfer in the summer, after starting the season well, he suffered a ankle injury in September ruled him out for three months. Then picked up a shoulder injury against Stoke City in January but is closing on a return.

Chances of an impact – unlikely.

With the form of Hector Bellerin and Arsenal’s defence looking particularly settled at the moment, Arsene Wenger can afford to ease Debuchy back into action and therefore he is the least likeliest to make a big impact.

2) Jack Wilshere

Appearances: 16

Goals: 1

The midfielder has been out of action since November when he picked up a ankle injury against Manchester United and although he made the Gunners bench against Crystal Palace in February, he hasn’t been in a match-day squad since.

Chances of an impact – likely.

Wilshere had been in good form for club an country prior to his injury and has proved this season that he is more than capable of producing magical moments. With the form of Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla, Wilshere’s task of getting into the side is a challenge while there will always be questions about his fitness.

1) Mikel Arteta

Appearances: 12

Goals: 1

The Arsenal captain has had a stop-start season, as injury has forced him to sit out many games this season and has watched on from the sidelines for the last four months.

Chances of an impact – very likely.

Due to his leadership and experience, he is the most likely of the returning trio to make an impact. As the season nears it’s conclusion the Gunners will need a calm figure in central midfield and Arteta has that in abundance.
