Some of the results are exactly as you would expect them, but there are a fair few shocks as well. There is a centre-back in tenth, and a complete unknown in second as well as some others you wouldn’t have guessed.

10) Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid, 30.6 kph

What is the defender doing in here!? The 29-year-old isn’t even one of the centre-backs known for dribbling out with the ball such as Gerard Pique and David Luiz. It does make you wonder about how comprehensive the study was when he is ahead of players such as Eden Hazard, Arjen Robben, and Neymar.

9) Franck Ribery, Bayern Munich, 30.7 kph

This is more like it. The Frenchman is well known for his dribbling ability, and it is no surprise that he makes it in.

8) Wayne Rooney, Manchester United, 31.2 kph

The Red Devils skipper isn’t known for his lightning pace up front, but at the same time he does have some serious skills with the ball at his feet. So although you would think others might be ahead of the 29-year-old it isn’t entirely ridiculous for the former Everton man to be here.

7) Lionel Messi, Barcelona, 32.5 kph

Four time Ballon d’Or winner Messi is one of the best players to have ever played the game, and his dribbling is one of the best aspects of his game.

6) Theo Walcott, Arsenal, 32.7 kph

His incredible speed off the ball isn’t quite replicated with it at his feet, but the forward is still pretty quick.

5) Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid, 33.6 kph

Although he isn’t in first, the Portuguese will still be happy to have beaten arch rival Lionel Messi.

4) Aaron Lennon, Everton (on loan from Tottenham), 33.8 kph

Imagine the winger had any sort of end product once his speedy running took him past all opposition defenders?

3) Antonio Valencia, Manchester United, 35.1 kph

Maybe not the most glamourous player, but Valencia has still been a regular in a few Premier League winning sides.

2) Jurgen Damm, Pachuca, 35.23 kph

It just so happens that the club doing the study have a player on the list. What were the chances of that? To be fair, the Mexico international is a very quick player, but is he really faster than the many established European stars that aren’t here?

1) Gareth Bale, Real Madrid, 36.9 kph

This statistic proves how great a signing the former Tottenham star could be if Los Blancos decide to let him go.
