Five most regrettable tweets in football history, including legendary Chelsea gaffe & Rio Ferdinand ‘sk*t’ jibe

Social media has been one of the huge developments of the technological era following it’s explosion onto the scene, and like it or not, it appears to be here to stay. Twitter has become an everyday part of our lives, and a vital tool used by football fans and media alike to communicate with players and fellow fans, and occasionally have a bit of a laugh at their expense.

Here are five times when it all went a bit wrong:

West Brom’s Marouane Fellaini gaffe

Dear, oh dear West Brom. During their match at the Hawthorns against Manchester United last October, they poked fun at Marouane Fellaini’s poor form as he warmed up on the sidelines. The Baggies were already 1-0 to the good following a Stephane Sessegnon wonder goal. It was all good fun until Fellaini then came on and subsequently scored the equaliser three minutes later. PSG counting their chickens

We all remember this , right? PSG steam into a 3-1 lead following the first leg of their Champions League quarter final against Chelsea, leading to this gloating tweet. Unluckily for them, the Blues roared back at Stamford Bridge and, thanks to a late Demba Ba goal, knocked the French side out on away goals.
Rio Ferdinand not living up to his role model tag

The former England captain should have known better than to call out someone giving him abuse on Twitter. Ferdinand was fined £25,000 and banned for three matches after the shameful jibe, which made him look less than intelligent. Man City and Roma both looking silly

Roma, Roma, Roma. Did you learn nothing from Manchester City’s terrible showing? Again, after this little stunt, of course Manchester City went over to the Stadio Olimpico and won 2-0.

Ashley Cole FA tweet

At the time, Cole was still a Chelsea player and he wasn’t best pleased with the FA’s independent regulatory commission casting doubt on his evidence in the John Terry racial abuse case. The controversial full-back was fined £90,000 for the tweet which was deleted, but his image was once again tarnished.
