The £35m-rated centre-back has long been linked as a top target in defence for Louis van Gaal, whose side have looked somewhat short in that position this season.

United spent big on a number of attacking players last summer, with van Gaal splashing the cash on marquee signings such as Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, and others.

The Red Devils could spend big again this summer, but now look set to focus on defensive recruitments as they hope to complete a move for Hummels, who has become regarded as one of the best in the world in his position in recent years.

The 26-year-old now seems to have spoken about his imminent departure from Dortmund with some of his fellow players, with a source close to the player quoted as saying: “He is preparing his exit and he gave some of the players signs that his transfer is close.”

This follows recent quotes from the player that he would be keen to play abroad in the future and that he may not be entirely happy with the state of the Dortmund team at the moment.

“I think moving abroad will be good for my professional and personal well-being. Eventually, I’d like to leave the Bundesliga,” he said.

“Everyone knows how much I love it at Dortmund, but I also want to make sure I’m part of a strong team with powerful players.”
