Fourth welcome fifth in the French top flight on Friday evening as Monaco host Saint-Etienne at the Stade Louis II. These two are among the division’s most in-form sides and while ASSE will be confident of taking something from the match, Monaco will be motivated by the knowledge that a win would take them within touching distance of the top three.

Following the international break, the Red and Whites sit in fourth. While they are four points of Olympique de Marseille (and the third Champions League spot) in third, and six off leaders Paris Saint-Germain, they do have one game in hand. Be under no illusions, beat Saint-Etienne, and Monaco are firmly in the title mix.

However, they will have to do without centre-back Ricardo Carvalho. The veteran sprained a knee while on international duty for Portugal, and while he is not understood to be facing an extended absence, he will not be fit for the visit of the Stephanois.

The returning Andrea Raggi or Aymen Abdennour are favourites to replace the ex-Chelsea stopper.

Les Verts have injury concerns of their own, too. Centre-back Moustapha Bayal Sall misses out through injury, while the unfortunate Romain Hamouma has once again been sidelined by calf trouble.

Christophe Galtier’s outfit would leapfrog Monaco-having played a game more-should they win on Friday evening.
