Marseille welcome PSG to the Stade Velodrome on Sunday evening in the biggest fixture of the French footballing calendar.

Not only is this match a clash between two bitter rivals and two of the nation’s giants, but this season, the proximity of the pair at the top of the Ligue 1 table gives the contest an extra edge.

Laurent Blanc’s side began the weekend at the top of the table on 59 points having seen-off FC Lorient ahead of the international break. Marseille were two points behind them, having themselves outclassed Racing Club de Lens two weeks ago.

Victory for Olympique Lyonnais over En Avant de Guingamp on Saturday has put them in top spot heading into the French Clasico, but a victory for PSG would see them leapfrog Les Gones.

An away win would also see OM drop five points behind the leaders, a gap that-with only seven games to play after this weekend-may prove too much for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Both sides had several high-profile players in action at international level over the last week, but PSG, in particular, will be boosted by the return from injury of Yohan Cabaye, Lucas Moura and Serge Aurier.
