Stade Malherbe Caen are worryingly close to the relegation zone with only eight games of the Ligue 1 season remaining. The Normandy outfit have not won in their last three matches and are only three points of 18th-place Toulouse and the division’s trapdoor.

Most concerning, perhaps, is their uninspired outing against Metz ahead of the international break when they could only manage a 0-0 draw, at home, against one of the division’s bottom two.

Nantes, by contrast, have lost only one of their last four and will be broadly confident of picking up their third win in their last five matches when they welcome Patrice Garande’s embattled side to La Beaujoie on Sunday.

Their own relegation concerns appear to be in the past, and the Canaries’ only objective this weekend will be preventing Caen escaping from the relegation mire.

In-demand goalkeeper Remy Riou has signed a new contract at the club, despite being linked with SC Bastia. It is news that should boost the crowd ahead of the match, although defenders Oswaldo Vizcarrondo and Papy Djilobodji had busy weeks on international duty with Venezuela and Senegal respectively and it remains to be seen if they will play any part in the Caen match.
