Here are the four players manager Louis van Gaal will need if he wants to be able to challenge for major honours…

4) Creative midfielder, Kevin de Bruyne

Van Gaal claimed back in February that his main target for this summer was a creative midfielder, reported The Guardian. There does seem to be a lack of spark in their midfield, with Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, and Marouane Fellaini not entirely known for their high assist records. They have been linked to former Chelsea man Kevin de Bruyne in the position during his stellar season with Wolfsburg by the Metro.

3) Centre-back, Mats Hummels

Sky Sports have linked the Red Devils to Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, and the German is apparently considering his future at the club. The 26-year-old would be perfect to shore up a back line that has had to rely heavily on goalkeeper David De Gea this season.

2) Striker, Edinson Cavani

With Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao misfiring, United will probably need another forward to help out Wayne Rooney in the next campaign. PSG’s Edinson Cavani has been linked to a move by the Manchester Evening News, and the Uruguayan is certainly of the pedigree van Gaal will be looking for.

1) Right-back, Nathaniel Clyne

With Luke Shaw and Daley Blind both covering the left but only Rafael and Antonio Valencia on the right, United look a bit unbalanced at the back. Nathaniel Clyne could be making the move according to Goal.com, and the Southampton man has proved for club and country that he could cut it at a higher level.
