Ahead of the eagerly-anticipated derby showdown we take a look at four famous goals scored in the iconic fixture over the last few years.

4) Sergio Aguero City headed to Old Trafford in April 2013 knowing their Premier League crown was going back to their oldest enemies. Indeed United lifted the trophy just weeks later. However, the Blues gave their fans something to shout about with a 2-1 win. Aguero secured three points with a fine solo effort late on, which left Red Devils defender Phil Jones all ends up.

3) Robin van Persie Dutchman van Persie was at the height of his powers when he guided a last-gasp free-kick past the despairing dive of City goalkeeper Joe Hart in December 2012, winning the derby 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium. He took the plaudits afterwards, although Blues midfielder Samir Nasri attracted fierce criticism for hiding behind Yaya Toure in the wall.

2) Mario Balotelli Enigmatic hitman Balotelli’s opener in City’s 6-1 triumph at Old Trafford in October 2011 is remembered more for the celebration than the quality of the strike, neat a finish as it was. The Italian casually turned away and lifted up his shirt, unveiling a second top which read the now immortal phrase ‘Why Always Me’.

1) Wayne Rooney United talisman Rooney produced a truly stunning overhead kick which earned his side a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in February 2011 and went on to be voted the greatest goal of the Premier League era the following year. Nani’s deflected cross from the right flank sat up invitingly for the striker and he demonstrated perfect technique to send the ball crashing past a static Joe Hart.
