The clash at Old Trafford brings one of the in form teams in the Premier League together with a side whose slide down the table has been alarming, and potentially fatal for Manuel Pellegrini’s future prospects with the current champions. Nevertheless, van Gaal is aware that his players will need to be at their best to overcome the Citizens.

One thing that the Dutchman has reminded his squad about, in the hope of giving them the best chance of securing three points, is their control in the cauldron of rivalry. United have already had five men dismissed during the campaign – an unfortunate record for van Gaal’s career, according to the Daily Star – and the former Bayern Munich boss is keen to ensure that that number does not grow, especially during their next fixture.

“Keeping control of your emotions is always a talent of a professional football player,” he explained.

“I am always warning them, especially in these types of games, that we have to control our emotion.”
