Where are they now? The stars of Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City – a Premier League classic

It seems like only yesterday, but it’s nearly six years since one of the great Manchester Derbies ever seen – when Manchester United beat Manchester City 4-3 in a thriller at Old Trafford that would go down as a Premier League classic. Much has changed at both clubs since then, so where are the players that starred that day now?

Goalkeepers:

Ben Foster – in goal for Manchester United that day, Ben Foster was never really a regular starter for the Red Devils, but filled in for Edin van der Saar on that day, now playing at West Bromwich Albion.

Shay Given – still in the Premier League, remarkably, Shay Given is with Aston Villa as a backup goalkeeper after being replaced by Joe Hart at the Etihad Stadium.

Defence:

John O’Shea – starting at right-back that day, John O’Shea is now with Sunderland after a long but uneventful stay with Manchester United.

Patrice Evra – an Old Trafford legend, Patrice Evra left the club last summer and is currently with Juventus.

Rio Ferdinand – a player who should really retire, Rio Ferdinand is perhaps in the final season of his playing career with Queens Park Rangers.

Nemanja Vidic – past his peak some time ago now, Nemanja Vidic is with Inter Milan and struggling to impress.

Micah Richards – despite looking a promising talent, Micah Richards never really made it at City and is currently on loan at Fiorentina.

Wayne Bridge – now 34 years old and retired, Wayne Bridge was most recently in the Championship with Reading.

Kolo Toure – a signing that never really worked out for City, Kolo Toure is now a squad player at Liverpool.

Joleon Lescott – now with West Bromwich Albion after falling out of favour at City last season, though he did pick up one final Premier League winners’ medal.

Midfield:

Park Ji-sung – after a season on loan at PSV from QPR last season, Park Ji-sung is now retired from playing and working as a club ambassador with United.

Ryan Giggs – only recently retired, Ryan Giggs is now assistant manager to Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

Darren Fletcher – a lot of these players seem to be ending up at West Brom, with two-goal hero Darren Fletcher moving to the Hawthorns in January.

Anderson – a key player for United in those days, Brazilian flop Anderson never really fulfilled his potential and recently left the club for Internacional.

Gareth Barry – a scorer for City that day, Gareth Barry had a good career with the club and is still going strong for Everton.

Nigel de Jong – a member of City’s title-winning squad in 2012, Nigel de Jong was then allowed to join current club AC Milan.

Stephen Ireland – bizarrely still a regular for City at this point, Stephen Ireland only had one good season with the club and is now with Stoke.

Attack:

Wayne Rooney – incredibly, the only member of the United team that started that day who is still a key player for the club, being made captain this summer.

Dimitar Berbatov – allowed to join Fulham in 2012, Dimitar Berbatov is now with AS Monaco and recently helped knock Arsenal out of the Champions League.

Craig Bellamy – scorer of two fine goals that day, Craig Bellamy was relegated with Cardiff City last season and has since retired, working with the Welsh club as an academy coach.

Shaun Wright-Phillips – a player who has totally disappeared, Shaun Wright-Phillips is surprisingly still around in the Premier League, rarely even making the QPR bench.

Carlos Tevez – currently starring for Juventus and leading the Serie A scoring charts after a superb season.

Substitutes:

Michael Owen – enjoying his finest moment in a United shirt by far that day with his stoppage time winner, Michael Owen is now a much-hated pundit with BT Sport.

Michael Carrick – only on the bench that day, Michael Carrick is now a key player and experienced member of this current United team.

Antonio Valencia – a new signing that season to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, Antonio Valencia is now a makeshift right-back for the Red Devils.

Martin Petrov – a skillful Bulgarian winger with a strong left foot, Martin Petrov has since played for Bolton, Espanyol and CSKA Sofia before retiring last summer.
