Louis van Gaal brought in midfielders Ander Herrera and Daley Blind over the summer, and has seen Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini perform wonders since the turn of the year, but appears to be keen on further strengthening this area of his Old Trafford squad.

The Metro claim that German international Sami Khedira is his first choice target in this regard but if a move for the Real Madrid man fails then he’ll try his hand at luring Matuidi away from the Parc des Princes side he has represented since 2011.

Matuidi is a regular in Laurent Blanc’s first team set-up, the former Saint-Etienne man starting all eight of their Champions League fixtures this season, and as such is presumably not a player the Ligue 1 champions would consider offers for.

A good run of form, six straight Premier League wins, has put Man United in a strong position to secure a top four finish and a return to Europe’s top club competition and as such van Gaal may well feel he has the ability to land big targets this summer.
