Assessing six Man United players Louis van Gaal has been told he must sign, including Depay and Bale

Despite spending over £150m prior to kicking off his first Premier League term at Old Trafford – including Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria and Ander Herrera – the club’s fans are still demanding more talent be bought.

One Manchester United supporter handed Louis van Gaal a summer transfer wish-list containing the names of six players that he believes the Dutchman must sign at the end of the season.

Take a look at the six players, as quoted by the Daily Star, that a young Manchester United fan has asked for…

Mats Hummels – Centre-back – Borussia Dortmund

The German has been a constant name linked with the Red Devils, and we would all be hugely disappointed if he doesn’t move to Old Trafford in the summer having had to listen to intense rumours for months.

Despite improved performances from Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in the second half of the season, Louis van Gaal knows that his defence needs strengthening.

Nonetheless, a major concern with the World Cup winner is his lack of pace. The 26-year-old’s primary strength is his ability on the ball, but he simply wouldn’t be afford such time in the Premier League.

Manchester United have a plethora of players that are comfortable on the ball, but the team is missing power – with Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes having not been sufficiently replaced.

A defender, such as Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, would perhaps be a better signing.

Nathaniel Clyne – Full-back – Southampton

A source has revealed in the Daily Star that the England international wants a move to the Red Devils in the summer.

The 24-year-old has established himself at the St Mary’s Stadium, along with Ryan Bertrand, as one of the most impressive in the defensive position in the Premier League.

A lack of full-back options at Louis van Gaal’s disposal, with just Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Luke Shaw to choose from on the flanks, Clyne could make the Saints star the perfect fit.

His disciplined play – a superb tackler and an attacking threat – would see him comfortably fit into the Dutchman’s formation.

Not to mention the number of homegrown talent among Manchester United’s senior squad isn’t as vast as it once was – and Clyne could therefore be a signing that would please the Old Trafford faithful.

Paul Pogba – Midfielder – Juventus

The France international has been linked with a shock return to Old Trafford since leaving the club in 2012 and, even if Manchester United are willing to part with tens of millions of pounds to secure his signature, we can’t see that the midfielder agreeing to a return – if he has a say in the matter.

What’s more, the 22-year-old perhaps isn’t the midfield general that the club really need.

Granted, Pogba can produce a moment of stunning magic on the ball – but he had his time at Old Trafford, and if Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t convinced, then his time with the Premier League giants should be considered done and dusted.

Gareth Bale – Winger – Real Madrid

What a signing this would be – but, along with Paul Pogba, is more of a fairytale rumour.

The Welsh wizard is without a doubt one of the best players in the world right now, despite having his critics in Spain.

Not only would he bring his incredible ability to Old Trafford – but securing the Bale brand would be a significant step in repairing the club’s damaged global reputation following two dismal seasons.

Nonetheless, a move to the Santiago Bernabeu was a dream for the former Tottenham Hotspur star, and we can’t imagine the 25-year-old will be willing to give up on his career in Madrid so soon after signing.

Memphis Depay – Winger – PSV Eindhoven

The Netherlands international is poised to become Louis van Gaal’s first signing of the summer after Sky Sports confirmed that the club had made an enquiry over his availability.

The winger has scored 23 times in all competitions for PSV so far this season – thus it’s clear to see why Manchester United have registered their interest early.

Unafraid of trying his luck from distance, and a set-piece specialist – he screams goals – and his confidence would be infectious to the rest of the United squad.

Jackson Martinez – Striker – FC Porto

The Porto forward wants to leave Estadio do Dragao in the summer, the Daily Mail report, and with Radamel Falcao unlikely to make his loan deal permanent, Martinez could be the ideal striker to bring in.

The 28-year-old has lit up the European stage this season – scoring seven times – and is the Champions League’s fourth highest scorer this term – just one off Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Combine this with the 17 he has netted in the Portugal Primeira Liga, and goals are guaranteed. Moreover, his power and pace is likely to see him settle into the physicality of England’s top flight with ease.

His goalscoring record for Porto is phenomenal – and it’s hard to believe that no club has made a move for the striker earlier in his career.

However, reports claim that the Portuguese outfit want £30m for Colombian – and this is a huge price to pay for a player nearing the age landmark of 30-years-old.
