Respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims on his website that the Reds have already held discussions with the Bundesliga club’s sporting director Michael Zorc with a view to securing a deal once the summer transfer window opens.

Di Marzio believes the Merseyside outfit have run out of patience with Balotelli after a disastrous campaign, and are prepared to let him leave.

They see Immobile as the man to fill the void and concrete steps have already been made, but he too is not without his problems. The Italy international’s debut season in Germany has been one to forget, with a return of only nine goals in 27 appearances.

His £15m switch from Torino last summer led to great expectancy but he and a number of team-mates have failed to find consistent form, and as a result Jurgen Klopp’s side sit in mid-table.

Klopp himself is leaving at the end of the season and Immobile may not be the only player to follow him out of the exit.
