The Mexicans had struggled with a poor playing surface for much of the match, but finally managed to get themselves level after 27 year old Esqueda beat the offside trap to round the keeper and slot home.
Esqueda only joined Tigres in January after signing from Liga MX rivals Atlas. After originally struggling to pin down a place in the team, he has scored five goals in the Copa Libertadores – including a hat-trick in his side’s 5-4 win over Juan Aurich in their final group match.
Tigres are in the easiest half of the draw and cannot play the six most famous sides – Boca Juniors, River Plate, Racing Club, Cruzeiro, Corinthians, and Sao Paulo – before the final.
The second leg is next week.
