Barcelona and Bayern Munich have also been linked to the left-back, who has played 28 times in Serie A this season. In his most recent match the 25-year-old scored and set up a goal as they won the Turin derby against Juventus, which will have boosted his transfer value even further.

Cairo said: “We’re in a condition where we can keep hold of our players – we have no problems with the balance sheet. If Darmian would like to stay then Torino will never sell him, but if he were to signal a desire to leave and if there were to be a crazy offer for him, we might sell. But I’ve not received anything yet.’

The Gunners currently have Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal who can play on the left side of the defence, but it is one of the weaker areas of their side. Gibbs suffers with injury problems, and Monreal is solid but not spectacular in the role. Manager Arsene Wenger has also shown in recent seasons that he is no longer afraid of spending big with the signings of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
