1) One of the best teams in 2015

Prior to their recent blip, Liverpool have looked like arguably the best team in the country in 2015, combining a great run of results with some convincing performances and stylish football. Players like Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling have been particularly impressive and give the Reds a feel of being a better side overall, and one that would not be out of place in the top four this season or mixing it up in the Champions League next.

2) More generous fixtures

It’s close, but Liverpool perhaps have the easier looking games between now and the end of the season, with the Reds taking on a Chelsea side with nothing to play for this weekend before a home game against Crystal Palace and an away trip to Stoke City. None are a given, of course, but if Liverpool can continue their momentum from beating Queens Park Rangers and show their best form, this is perfectly doable. United, meanwhile, are away at Crystal Palace and Hull City, whilst facing Arsenal in between, who are also keen to make sure they finish as high as possible.

3) Man United plagued by injuries

With key injuries to players like Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, not to mention stories of a virus affecting their squad for this weekend’s game against Crystal Palace, it looks like there might just be too many important players missing for the Red Devils in this crucial period for the club.

4) Sterling could move upfront

With Daniel Sturridge out, Liverpool certainly have a problem upfront, though it could prove a blessing in disguise if Raheem Sterling returns to that false nine role that he played so well earlier in the season. The England international is arguably at his best in that position, more central and with more freedom to roam, and could show his class with some big-game performances before the season is over.

5) United still adapting to van Gaal

Like it or not, United have had some real rotten phases under Louis van Gaal this season and still don’t look entirely convincing in his system. A strong run of wins recently looked to be restoring some confidence, which is now in tatters again after three defeats on the spin in games they could and perhaps should have won, given their dominance in terms of possession, with only silly defensive errors again proving to be their undoing.
