Here are their ten most expensive signings over the last 12 years rated…

10) Didier Drogba, £24m, 9/10

This move has been an unqualified success, with the Ivorian becoming a club legend. After a slow start the 37-year-old has managed an amazing 164 goals in 379 appearances for the Blues and led them to their one and only Champions League in 2012.

9) Michael Essien, £24.4m, 8/10

256 appearances over nine years with the club speak for themselves. The Ghana international arrived under Jose Mourinho in his first spell at the club, and stayed afterwards to be there for almost the entire Abramovich era to date. He started to show signs of age from 2011 onwards, but the fact it took until January 2014 and Nemanja Matic to find a suitable successor in midfield says a lot about his influence.

8) Oscar, £25m, 7/10

It is yet to be seen if the Brazilian will become a hero at Stamford Bridge, but the 23-year-old has made a good effort of it so far. He has quickly become a regular in the side since arriving in 2012, and could be a key part of their midfield for years to come.

7) Juan Cuadrado, £26.8m, 4/10

Although he has only been at the club since January, the Colombian has failed to make any sort of impact in English football since arriving. In ten Premier League appearances he is yet to score or create a single goal. Hopefully it gets better for the 26-year-old.

=4) Cesc Fabregas, £30m, 8/10

A great first half of the season has been followed by a mediocre second, but 21 assists in all competitions is still a great total for a debut campaign. If the former Arsenal man continues in this vein he could become a hero at two London clubs.

=4) Willian, £30m, 6/10

The Brazilian hasn’t done badly since arriving in 2013, but you might expect more from a player who signed for so much. He has been a versatile squad player for Chelsea and £30 million is a lot to pay for an albeit highly talented James Milner.

=4) Andriy Shevchenko, £30m, 3/10

After being brilliant at AC Milan the Ukrainian was expected to be a hit in the Premier League. However, he flopped and only managed 22 goals in 77 appearances, before going back to his home country with Dynamo Kiev at a big loss in 2009.

=2) Eden Hazard, £32m, 9/10

With only three years at the club the 24-year-old has already shown the Chelsea faithful that they could have the next Ballon d’Or winner after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel messi at the club. One area in which he could improve is on the international stage, where the Belgian has only seven goals in 56 appearances.

=2) Diego Costa, £32m, 8/10

Injuries have affected the second half of the season for the 26-year-old, but he still has 19 goals in the top flight. The side looks far more dangerous with the Spain international in the side, and there has been a noticeable tailing off while he deals with hamstring issues. Could he be the heir to Didier Drogba?

1) Fernando Torres, £50m, 3/10

One of the most well known transfer flops ever, the Spaniard may regret moving to Stamford Bridge for the rest of his career. Arriving from Liverpool in 2011 as one of the best players in the world, he never found his stride with the Blues despite his famous goal against Barcelona in the Champions League.
