After spending over £150 million on new players last summer according to talkSPORT, a similar splurge could be on the cards. So who could Louis van Gaal bring in to United in the next transfer window? Here are seven players they have recently been linked to…

7) Gareth Bale, Real Madrid

The Welshman has been having far less success with Los Blancos in his second season than his first, and some of the fans have been turning on their record signing. The Daily Star have linked the Red Devils to a sensational move for the forward, who would certainly improve their team.

6) Kevin De Bruyne, Wolfsburg

Although Chelsea deemed the Belgian not good enough just last summer, he has gone on to prove them wrong in the Bundesliga. The 23-year-old has 24 assists in all competitions, and a quick return to English football at Old Trafford could be on the cards according to the Metro.

5) Paul Pogba, Juventus

Originally let go for nothing by United in 2012, they will have a lot of competition for the midfielder if they want to bring him back. The Daily Star think a move is a possibility though, and the 22-year-old would certainly bolster the middle of the park.

4) Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid

Another Madrid star, and the Daily Star thinks a return to the Red Devils could be on the cards for the 30-year-old. It would be an unbelievable move if it went through, but could also cost them a massive £150 million.

3) Ilkay Gundogan, Borussia Dortmund

Sky Sports believe that the midfield maestro could move to Old Trafford this summer. BVB have made it clear that the Germany international will be leaving and United could be top of the list of suitors.

2) Christian Benteke, Aston Villa

12 goals in 25 Premier League appearances this season have had the Belgian impressing big clubs again. Liverpool are challenging the Red Devils for the big striker’s signature according to the Daily Mirror, but Champions League football at Old Trafford could a be a big factor.

1) Mats Hummels, Borussia Dortmund

This story seems to have been running forever, with the Metro running it again recently. The defender could be a good reinforcement for United’s shaky back line, and help ease the pressure on goalkeeper David De Gea if he ever arrives in the Premier League.
