Arsenal struggled to deal with Ashley Young throughout the contest, and the England international forged the first opening when his cross was finished impressively by Ander Herrera.

Arsene Wenger shuffled his pack in the second period, however, and the Gunners equalised when Tyler Blackett could only divert substitute Theo Walcott’s shot past Victor Valdes.

Two points would be enough for the North London outfit to secure third place in the league table.

Here are the Arsenal player ratings

GK) David Ospina 6

An able showing by the Colombian; his compatriot Falcao gave him little trouble, and there was little the stopper could do about Ander Herrera’s explosive opener.

RB) Hector Bellerin 4

A performance the youngster would like to forget. He was exposed—badly—by Ashley Young and his positional naivety was present for all to see. A nervous outing.

CB) Per Mertesacker 5

Remains remarkably unconvincing in the air for such a big man and looked clumsy in possession. His time may be up with the Gunners.

CB) Laurent Koscielny 6

By far the more impressive of Arsenal’s two centre-backs, Koscielny was a brave and commanding presence and also demonstrated the composure in possession that was lacking from his German teammate.

LB) Nacho Monreal 5

Remains unconvincing at left-back, despite several key tackles. He was arguably at fault for United’s goal when he failed to track Herrera and clear the danger.

CM) Francis Coquelin 6

A combative and dynamic display as the Frenchman succeeded in breaking up several nascent, promising United attacks. His attempts to inspire his teammates fell on fallow ground, but at least he was trying…

CM) Santi Cazorla 5

A frustrating showing from the frustrated Santi Cazorla, who was reduced to the peripheries as his attempts to prompt and probe were comfortably dealt with by United.

AMC) Mesut Ozil 7

Like Juan Mata for United, several inventive moments and flashes of creativity failed due to the limitations of his teammates rather than any failing on the part of the playmaker.

RW) Aaron Ramsey 7
An encouraging second-half performance by the Welshman who improved as Arsenal came to life. Didn’t always compete on the right, but impressed with his passing ability and caused some trouble for Marcos Rojo.

CF) Olivier Giroud 5
Ineffective in the first half and wasteful in the second, a poor showing by the Frenchman considering his typically high standards.

LW) Alexis Sanchez 6
Generally well-marshalled by United, and he had enough to think about defensively with Antonio Valencia seeing a lot of the ball at right-back. A few pretty moments but little to concern the Red Devils.

Subs:

Jack Wilshere 6 Immediately more effective than Cazorla having replaced the Spaniard on 73 minutes and gave some indication of the role he can play in a potential title challenge next season.

Theo Walcott 8 A genuine difference-maker for Arsenal. His pace, movement and dribbling caused problems for the Red Devils right after his introduction and it was telling that Blackett’s own goal came from an effort on goal by the England international.
