According to the Metro, Louis van Gaal has sent scouts to watch the Brazilian this term, yet will only consider making an official offer if they opt to sell di Maria and recoup the £59.7m paid to Real Madrid for his signature last summer.

The Lazio forward will cost upwards of £40m given his his current contract with the Biancocelesti is not set to expire until 2020.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a fine breakthrough campaign in Serie A – scoring 11 goals and registering seven assists in all competitions – and his blistering performances haven’t gone unnoticed by the Premier League’s elite.

Nonetheless, with Lazio poised to secure a place in next season’s Champions League, it would take one hefty offer to prize the youngster away from the Stadio Olimpico.
