10) Massimiliano Allegri – £224m

A manager who made big signings during his time at AC Milan, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho, Massimiliano Allegri has not yet spent huge amounts at Juventus, though Alvaro Morata has proven a great buy from Real Madrid.

9) Brendan Rodgers – £262m

Shocking considering he has only been in the Premier League since 2011, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has spent tons in his career at Anfield, with few good signings to show for it and many flops such as Mario Balotelli and Dejan Lovren.

8) Louis van Gaal – £286m

After his £150m spending spree at Manchester United last summer, followed up by a deal for Memphis Depay already this year, Louis van Gaal makes it into 8th on this list and could rise even higher if he carries on like this.

7) Pep Guardiola – £401m

Considering he’s only been in management since 2008, Pep Guardiola comes pretty high with some questionable moves in the transfer market, including the high-profile failed purchase of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Barcelona.

6) Sir Alex Ferguson – £404m

Despite retiring two years ago, Sir Alex Ferguson is still fairly high on this list and has of course been hugely active in the transfer market for Manchester United, spending big on the likes of Wayne Rooney, David de Gea and Robin van Persie in the last decade.

5) Arsene Wenger – £413m

Surprisingly ahead of his old rival, famously frugal Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger makes it into fifth on this list, and in fairness the big-money buys of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in recent years have shown a change of approach in the transfer market for the Gunners.

4) Roberto Mancini – £435m

No surprise here, Roberto Mancini had buckets of money to play with during his time as Manchester City manager, breaking the bank for some huge signings like Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

3) Manuel Pellegrini – £576m

Another big-spending City boss, Manuel Pellegrini has not done so well with his purchases at the Etihad Stadium, but was in charge of Real Madrid as they signed the extremely expensive Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso.

2) Carlo Ancelotti – £709m

With stints at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, it’s no surprise to see Carlo Ancelotti this high on the list. The Italian has overseen the world-record transfer deal for Gareth Bale alongside big signings such as James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Fernando Torres, and many more.

1) Jose Mourinho – £849m

Possibly the least surprising of all is Jose Mourinho coming in first on this list. For all the success of the Portuguese tactician, he has benefitted hugely from having ridiculous amounts to spend at both Chelsea and Real Madrid, splashing out on the likes of Didier Drogba, Andriy Shevchenko, Mesut Ozil, Angel Di Maria, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa to name just a few.
