The defeat means that the Reds finished the season sixth in the Premier League, a disappointment after challenging for the title and eventually ending second last time around. The Merseyside club also went out of both the FA Cup and Capital One Cup at the semi final stage after being knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages.

This has led to pressure on Rodgers, which has only heightened after their shocking loss to the Potters. It was the biggest defeat the club have suffered in Premier League history. At the same time it was also not the way captain Steven Gerrard would have wanted to sign off before moving to MLS side LA Galaxy in the summer, although he did score.

Fans were calling for former manager Benitez during the game, who led them to Champions League glory in 2005. He is currently in charge at Serie A side Napoli, but may be tempted away by a return to England. Can Rodgers stick around for much longer with this kind of pressure?
