Darren Ferguson is 4/1 with BetVictor to be the next manager of Sheffield United after the Blades sacked Nigel Clough earlier today.
Clough guided United to the Capital One Cup semi finals, but cup competitions are a bonus, and with league promotion the top priority, the club lost in the play off semi finals to Swindon. Despite the South Yorkshire club being involved in an amazing second leg with the Robins which ended 5-5, they were eliminated 7-6 on aggregate – which would appear to have been enough for the club hierarchy to opt for a change of coach.
Whoever comes in to the job is likely to be expected to gain promotion back to the Championship in their first season, and there are several contenders for the job.
Former Peterborough boss and son of Sir Alex, Darren Ferguson is the early favourite. The Scot left the Posh earlier this campaign while they were 15th in League One, but prior to that he had guided them to English football’s second tier and kept them there for successive seasons.
However, Ferguson is up against former Blades favourites Neil Warnock and Chris Morgan for the job. Warnock led Sheffield United to the Premier League in his last tenure at Bramall Lane, and nearly kept them up but for the controversial signings of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano by West Ham.
Meanwhile Morgan played for United for nine years, and captained them to their jaunt in the top flight. He was also their caretaker boss back in 2013, but missed out to David Weir for the permanent job that time.
BetVictor spokesman Charlie McCann said: “Clough paid the price for not getting the Blades back into the Championship which, arguably, should be the minimum for a Club of their standing and resources.
“Once again they have been excellent in the Cup competitions but you wonder whether their exploits in the knock out competitions derailed their primary objective of promotion. I’m not convinced Ferguson is the right favourite with Chris Morgan and Neil Warnock, both 8/1, making more appeal than the former Peterborough boss.”
