The Gunners are currently relying on Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs in the position, but neither has done enough to completely tie down the first team spot. The former is apparently keen on going back to his native Spain, lending extra urgency to manager Arsene Wenger’s need for a full-back.

However, they will have to fight off the Red Devils for the Switzerland international. Louis van Gaal may be after Rodriguez after being unconvinced by Luke Shaw. Although the England international only signed last summer the 63-year-old has already criticised his fitness, and Daley Blind has played in the position at times.

Rodriguez has made 38 appearances this season for Wolfsburg, scoring ten goals and creating another four to help them finish second in the Bundesliga. The 22-year-old could cost either Premier League side £21.3 million, but at such a young age and with a good record that could well be worth it.
