The Red Devils are understood to be in pole position to land the Germany international this summer after already holding talks with the player’s representatives over a potential transfer.

Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Dortmund has threatened to spark an exodus at the club, with forward Marco Reus [via Daily Star] and World Cup-winning defender Mats Hummels also rumoured to have attracted interest from Old Trafford [via the Daily Star].

However, the Rossoneri have emerged as potential suitors for the 24-year-old as they look to overhaul the squad following a disappointing campaign which has seen the Italians giants fall from grace [Calciomercato via Inside Futbol].

The seven-time champions of Europe need at least a point from their final game of the season against Atalanta on Saturday evening to secure a top-half finish in Serie A and have earmarked Gundogan as a top transfer target as they begin a major rebuilding process at the San Siro over the 2015-16 campaign.

In any case, United would hold the advantage in any possible negotiations for the deep-lying playmaker as they can offer Champions League football next season.

Gundogan featured 23 times during Dortmund’s troubled Bundesliga campaign, scoring three goals and contributing four assists.
