Liverpool are now believed to be chasing the Saints right-back, leaving United to ponder two other options in that position, while three centre-backs are also being considered.

Read on to find out United’s five-man defensive shortlist for this summer’s transfer window…

1) Nicolas Otamendi (Valencia)

One of United’s top targets at centre-back is Valencia star Nicolas Otamendi, who has been outstanding in La Liga this season, looking like potentially one of the best defenders in Europe.

2) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

A long-time target for the Red Devils, Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund remains a big target for van Gaal as he looks to tighten up at the back, though there is some uncertainty about whether or not the German World Cup winner wants to move this summer.

3) Dante (Bayern Munich)

In another possible Bundesliga raid, United are also considering a move for Bayern Munich defender Dante, with the big Brazilian possibly available for the right price this summer.

4) Dani Alves (Barcelona)

Long regarded as one of the best right-backs in the world, Barcelona contract rebel Dani Alves could be on his way to Old Trafford after snubbing a new deal at the Nou Camp, leaving him free to complete a Bosman to any top club of his choosing.

5) Gregory van der Wiel (Paris Saint-Germain)

Another option at right-back is PSG star Gregory van der Wiel, who is said to be available this summer as the French giants also target a move to sign Barcelona’s Alves.
