They put together a list of the top five speeds that players reached during the campaign, with a surprising star absolutely destroying the competition. In a squad that contains pacy wingers such as Angel Di Maria, Antonio Valencia, and Adnan Januzaj, there is only one attacking wideman in the top five.

One man managed to get three of the entries, clearly proving that he is the fastest footballer at the club. Find out who it was over the next few pages…

5) Luke Shaw, 34.25kph v Chelsea (H)

Despite several injuries during the campaign, the former Southampton man was fit enough at one point to register this speed. Maybe if his fitness was better he’d be challenging at the top?

4) Wayne Rooney, 34.39kph v Newcastle (A)

The captain manages the only top speed away from home in the top five, perhaps showing what a difference having fans cheering you on can make.

3) Ashley Young, 34.65kph v Arsenal (H)

After enjoying something of a renaissance under Louis van Gaal last season, the 29-year-old showed the lightning pace that he was known for at Aston Villa and Watford against the Gunners. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win the game and close their gap on the Gunners in the Premier League.

2) Wayne Rooney, 34.96kph v Manchester City (H)

Its the skipper again, and this time it looks like the derby spirit pushed him on to new heights. The 29-year-old has a great record against their ‘noisy’ neighbours, and this effort could go some way to explaining why.

1) Wayne Rooney, 35kph v Aston Villa (H)

Absolutely blowing away the competition, its a third entry for the England international to put his supposedly fast squadmates to shame. No one will ever know why he was trying so hard at home to the Villans though. At least it will give him some ammunition against the jibes over his weight that surface every now and again.
