With a number of top clubs set to be in the hunt for a new big-name signing in defence this summer, there are several exciting new centre-back partnerships that could be formed in time for next season – here’s our pick of the best six below…

1) John Terry/Raphael Varane (Chelsea)

With Chelsea looking for a long-term replacement for John Terry, Jose Mourinho has several times tried to sign one of his old favourites from Real Madrid – Raphael Varane. The French youngster is on the Blues’ radar again this summer and could form a fine partnership at the back with Terry before eventually taking his place in the team.

2) Marcos Rojo/Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester United)

A potentially awesome Argentine pairing for Manchester United, with the Red Devils rumoured to be edging ever closer to bringing in Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia. The former Porto man has shone in La Liga and would help make Louis van Gaal’s side more serious title contenders next season.

3) Laurent Koscielny/Kostas Manolas (Arsenal)

With Arsenal perhaps in need of a replacement for Per Mertesacker, the Gunners have been linked with a move to sign AS Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas. The talented Greek international caught Arsenal’s eye while he was at previous club Olympiacos, and he has impressed again in Italy, looking like the ideal player to come in and form a strong partnership with Koscielny at the back.

4) Vincent Kompany/John Stones (Manchester City)

With Manchester City urgently in need of better defenders, Vincent Kompany could get one last chance to get back to his best playing alongside the immensely talented England youngster John Stones, who could be leaving Everton this summer after impressing at Goodison Park.

5) Gerard Pique/Marquinhos (Barcelona)

Despite being linked with Manchester United, PSG starlet Marquinhos is also wanted by Barcelona and would make a big improvement on players like Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen at the Nou Camp, potentially forming a world class combination with Gerard Pique in the middle.

6) Sergio Ramos/Laurent Koscielny (Real Madrid)

Another partnership Koscielny could be in next season is with Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, with rumours that the Spanish giants want to sign the Frenchman from Arsenal to boost their backline in order to get back to winning ways next season. This would certainly be an intriguing move for Real, with Koscielny an underrated talent in the Premier League.
