With rumours that Manchester City are lining up a surprise raid on £60m Manchester United attacking midfielder Angel Di Maria, here’s a list of six alternatives for the club who’d be better buys than the overrated Argentine…

1) Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)

One of the best playmakers in the world, Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus is surely on his way to a bigger club this summer and would be a perfect fit at Manchester City, far better than Di Maria based on his showing in his first season in the Premier League.

2) Kevin De Bruyne (Wolfsburg)

After a superb season in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, former Chelsea star Kevin De Bruyne has shown his quality with 10 goals and 20 assists, looking a more reliable option for City than Di Maria at the moment – and likely far cheaper at around £35m.

3) Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)

An ambitious move perhaps, but City have been linked with Alexis Sanchez before and should strongly consider another raid on Arsenal this summer. The Chilean, unlike Di Maria, settled instantly in England and was one of the best players in the Premier League in 2014/15.

4) Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

Another Bundesliga star, Thomas Muller could surely be available for the right money this summer, and would be a better investment at £60m than Di Maria on current form, showing a great knack for goals and assists in the big games for club and country down the years.

5) Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

A player who could well be a great deal more expensive than Di Maria, but Gareth Bale would be a superb buy for City at around £80m this summer, with the Welshman also qualifying as homegrown as a nice bonus!

6) Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)

Finally, City are right to be pursuing a move for Liverpool’s £50m-rated winger Raheem Sterling, even if he is over-priced. The England youngster is an outstanding talent who would immediately add another dimension to Manuel Pellegrini’s side’s attack.
