With the summer transfer window now underway, here’s a look at ten clubs who look to be selling large numbers of players as well as buying them ahead of the new season, with Chelsea and Real Madrid among the surprise names…
1) Southampton
Wanted players: Morgan Schneiderlin, Victor Wanyama, Nathaniel Clyne
Having sold a long list of players last summer as Luke Shaw joined Manchester United, Calum Chambers left for Arsenal and the trio of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren all moved to Liverpool, it is little surprise to see Southampton players being lined up for moves again this year, with Schneiderlin and Wanyama wanted by Arsenal and Clyne by both Liverpool and United.
2) Chelsea
Wanted players: Oscar, Petr Cech, Juan Cuadrado, Filipe Luis, Mohamed Salah, Loic Remy
Although it remains to be seen if all of these players will move, Chelsea could be set for a major clearout this summer as Arsenal seemingly close in on Petr Cech. Elsewhere, Juventus want to sign Oscar, Filipe Luis could return to Atletico Madrid, Juan Cuadrado is a target for several Serie A clubs, Mohamed Salah is on Tottenham’s radar, and Loic Remy could join West Ham.
3) Everton
Wanted players: Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley, John Stones, James McCarthy
A club who underachieved in 2014/15, Everton could now struggle to keep some of their star names this summer as Manchester United chase Lukaku, Chelsea and Manchester City look at Barkley and Stones, and McCarthy is strongly linked with a move to Arsenal.
4) Real Madrid
Wanted players: Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas
Remarkably, Real Madrid, who are so well know for their buying and spending power, could be seeing a lot of big names leave this summer. Although surely not all of these will move, the above names are attracting strong interest as Gareth Bale is linked with Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo with PSG, Raphael Varane with Chelsea and Iker Casillas with both Liverpool and Arsenal.
5) Porto
Wanted players: Jackson Martinez, Yachine Brahimi, Alex Sandro
With Danilo already joining Real Madrid, more Porto players could be on the way out this summer as big clubs look to poach the Portuguese giants once again. Jackson Martinez is wanted by Arsenal, while Yacine Brahimi and Alex Sandro have both been on Manchester City’s radar in recent months.
6) Manchester United
Wanted players: David de Gea, Angel Di Maria, Robin van Persie, Nani, Javier Hernandez
Another big-spending club who could also oversee a large number of exits this summer, Manchester United look to be clearing out the deadwood by letting the likes of Robin van Persie, Nani and Javier Hernandez go, though Real Madrid and PSG could swoop for David de Gea and Angel Di Maria, respectively, in less ideal moves for the Red Devils.
7) Atletico Madrid
Wanted players: Koke, Antoine Griezmann, Mario Mandzukic, Diego Godin, Miranda, Jan Oblak
Having lost so many big names in Diego Costa, Filipe Luis and Thibaut Courtois last summer, it looks like it could be another difficult transfer window for Atletico Madrid. Chelsea are on the prowl again for Koke and Griezmann, while Juventus look like signing Mandzukic and Manchester United want Godin, Miranda and Oblak.
8) Borussia Dortmund
Wanted players: Marco Reus, Ilkay Gundogan, Mats Hummels, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
A club used to losing its stars, Borussia Dortmund could be set for an unpleasant time again this summer as Europe’s biggest clubs all eye the likes of Marco Reus and Mats Hummels. Ilkay Gundogan is also wanted by Arsenal and Manchester United, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been linked with Liverpool.
9) Juventus
Wanted players: Paul Pogba, Arturo Vidal, Carlos Tevez, Alvaro Morata, Andrea Pirlo
Despite being so dominant in Italy in recent times, Juventus look like struggling to hold on to so many of their stars this summer, with almost every big club in Europe chasing Paul Pogba in particular. Meanwhile, Vidal is wanted by Arsenal, Tevez by Liverpool, Morata back at Real Madrid, and Andrea Pirlo by shock suitors in the Premier League in Liverpool and Chelsea.
10) Benfica
Wanted players: Nicolas Gaitan, Eduardo Salvio, Talisca, Ola John
Another club used to selling their best players, Benfica are braced for raids from Manchester United and Liverpool for Nicolas Gaitan, while promising youngsters such as Talisca and Ola John have been linked with those teams as well, plus Chelsea and Arsenal.
