The hosts will fancy their chances of eliminating the reigning South American champions after topping their opening pool in the continental showpiece.

Uruguay have been a poor imitation of the side that won the tournament four years ago and were an impotent force in the group stage.

Without suspended Luis Suarez, the Celeste struggled to demonstrate attacking cohesion and menace in the final third and managed only two goals as they limped out of their group.

Oscar Tabarez’s side beat Jamaica in their opener, but fell to Argentina and only advanced after a 1-1 draw with Paraguay in their final match.

They advanced to the knockout stages after finishing as one of the best two third-placed teams, although few would back them to progress much further, with Edinson Cavani struggling to lead the line for the 15-time South American champions.

Chile, by contrast, driven forward by buoyant home support, topped Group A after accruing seven points.

La Roja were particularly impressive in their 5-0 demolition of Bolivia—who themselves beat Ecuador and drew with Mexico—and will be confident of progressing to the final if they can overcome an out-of-sorts Uruguay.

Should they advance to the semi-final, a potential draw of Peru or Bolivia would leave Jorge Sampaoli’s side as overwhelming favourites to return to their first final since 1987.
