With a raft of new signings and Raheem Sterling’s future still up in the air, these are uncertain times at Liverpool Football Club. So here’s a look at three very different ways the Reds could be lining up for the start of the new season, with Brendan Rodgers having some key decisions to make on some personnel, as well as tweaking his tactics to best fit in some new signings into their ideal positions.

1) 4-2-3-1 – if Sterling stays
In a best-case scenario, Liverpool could still have a chance of keeping Sterling at the club next season, though that still begs the question of how best to use him. The 20-year-old arguably fared best in a ‘false 9’ striker role last year, and could be used there again due to the vast options in attacking midfield now with the signings of James Milner and Roberto Firmino. This leaves no room for either Daniel Sturridge or Danny Ings, however, though that could be an option the club have to take at times due to the latter probably only being a squad player and the former having so much trouble with injuries. With Milner in a more advanced role, Emre Can moves into midfield alongside Jordan Henderson, a role he has been tipped to play in the future despite largely playing in defence in 2014/15.
2) 4-4-2
In a slightly more straightforward lineup, Liverpool could go back to using two strikers as they enjoyed so successfully with Suarez and Sturridge in 2013/14. Ings’ signing raised some question marks, but he is a talented young forward who could shine if given regular chances up front in this attacking lineup, which includes Firmino and Coutinho in fairly free roles from out wide, plus Milner likely to have a slightly more attacking role alongside Henderson in central midfield. This also sees Can move back into central defence, with emphasis on Clyne and Moreno to provide the width due to the playing style of the attackers ahead of them.
3) 3-4-3
A formation that worked very well for Liverpool for so much of last season, 3-4-3 could be the answer for the Reds again here. Ings probably isn’t good enough to start regularly, so Sturridge will be the main man up front, supported by Firmino and Coutinho in more suitable free roles in attack. Clyne and Moreno will again provide the width in wing-back roles, which should suit them perfectly given their style of play, while Can, Sakho and Skrtel line up together in a decent-looking back three. This lineup would also seemingly make it the simplest way to rotate players like Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic when needed.
