It was Paraguay who eliminated the Selecao from the continental showpiece in the final-eight stage of the tournament four years ago.

In that match—in La Plata—the two sides played out a 0-0 draw before Paraguay, then managed by current Argentina boss Gerardo Martino, won 2-0 on penalties, with Mano Menezes’s Brazil missing all of their four spotkicks.

Dunga’s side will be looking to finish off their continental rivals in regular time, and will be able to call upon the likes of Willian, Philippe Coutinho and Robinho. New Liverpool signing Roberto Firmino is also likely to start for the five-time winners.

Paraguay, however, have already demonstrated their resolve and their ability to find the net in Chile, having held much-fancied Argentina to a 2-2 draw, matched Uruguay 1-1 and beat Jamaica by a narrow margin.

If Brazil are to see off Paraguay, they may need to be more proactive than they were in the group stage, when they accrued only six points and were defeated by Colombia. The negative football that characterised Dunga’s first reign in charge of the national side has returned, and the likes of Lucas Barrios, Nelson Valdez and Edgar Benitez have all found the net so far during the tournament.
