Clyne Liverpool: Five right-backs Brendan Rodgers should have signed instead, including Barcelona star and England international

Liverpool have wasted no time in bringing in a host of new signings this summer with Brendan Rodgers having already secured deals to sign James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Brazilian playmaker Roberto Firmino.

The Anfield side don’t appear to be ready to cease their summer transfer spending just yet and are hot on the heels of three further top signings.

Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

Having failed with an opening £10m bid for the England right-back it’s believed that Liverpool’s second offer may well be accepted by the St Mary’s side.

Rodgers successfully lured Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert from the south-coast side last summer and look a good bet to bring in Clyne, who will act as an ideal replacement for Glen Johnson.

Asier Illarramendi (Real Madrid)

The Spanish international has been criminally under-used since moving to the Bernabeu two years ago and the arrival of Rafa Benitez as Real Madrid’s new boss could well lead to a summer exit for the former Real Sociedad man.

Rodgers is keen to bring in Illarramendi to boost his central midfield options and the 25 year old would certainly represent an upgrade on the likes of Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen.

Carlos Bacca (Sevilla)

The big Colombian is the subject of genuine interest from the Merseyside outfit and some reports suggest Liverpool have already made an offer of £21.5m, which would trigger the La Liga star’s release clause.

Bacca has 49 goals in two seasons in Spain, helping Sevilla to back to back Europa League triumphs, and netting regularly in Spain’s top tier.
