Liverpool are perhaps earning a worrying reputation for being a selling club, with some of their biggest names all leaving in huge moves in recent years as big clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid have come calling…

5) Andy Carroll – £15.5m

Liverpool’s record signing for £35m, Andy Carroll also makes the top five of this list, as he was sold to West Ham United just a few years later for nearly £20m less than the Reds paid for him initially. A big flop at Anfield, Carroll still commanded a big enough fee for the Hammers, who may also be regretting their move now.

4) Javier Mascherano – £17.25m

A big player at Liverpool, Javier Mascherano arguably should have commanded an even higher fee than the £17.25m that saw him move to Barcelona back in 2010.

3) Xabi Alonso – £30m

Another major loss for Liverpool, Xabi Alonso is their third biggest sale for £30m when he became one of many Real Madrid Galactico signings in the summer of 2009, which also saw Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema arrive at the Bernabeu.

2) Fernando Torres – £50m

A hugely unpopular move that saw star striker Fernando Torres leave Liverpool for rivals Chelsea, the Spaniard ended up being a desperately poor buy for the Blues, but remains the second most expensive sale in the Merseysiders’ history.

1) Luis Suarez – £75m

One of the most expensive players ever, Luis Suarez cost Barcelona a whopping £75m last summer after he made the decision to leave Liverpool. In fairness, you get what you pay for, and the world class Uruguayan scored in the Champions League final to help the club seal the treble.
