Manchester United transfer news

Manchester United may be more well known now for their huge spending in the transfer market, but they have also brought in some of their best players on the cheap in recent times, with these our pick of the best bargains made by the Red Devils, in no particular order…

1) Eric Cantona – £1.2m

Even back then this proved an absolute steal, as Manchester United raided rivals Leeds United for a signing who proved to be one of the best in their history.

2) Andrei Kanchelskis – £650k

A fine winger signed for peanuts, Andrei Kanchelskis was another key player and part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s early success at Old Trafford.

3) Ronny Johnsen – £1.2m

A solid defender involved in United’s treble winning season of 1999, Ronny Johnsen was quite a find at only £1.2m.

4) Cristiano Ronaldo – £12.24m

One of United’s best players of recent times, Cristiano Ronaldo only cost just over £12m when he joined as a little-known teenager in 2003, and he went on to cost £80m when he left for Real Madrid in 2009.

5) Denis Irwin – £625k

One of United’s best ever left-backs, Denis Irwin was another player brought in for a criminally low fee of just £625,000.

6) Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – £1.5m

A legendary goal poacher, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a superb United player for many years and scored that famous winner to seal the Champions League final and the treble in 1999.

7) Edwin van der Sar – £2m

A surprise signing given his age at the time, but Edwin van der Sar proved a brilliant piece of business by United when they bought him from Fulham for just £2m.

8) Peter Schmeichel – £505k

Perhaps United’s best goalkeeper ever, Peter Schmeichel cost just over half a million, which makes the money talked about for David de Gea seem utter madness.
