The rivalry between Chile and Peru is not one of the most well-known in world football, but the ‘Pacific Clasico’ certainly among the fiercest.

There is an animosity between the two rivals due to political, cultural and sporting reasons, and neither will consider losing a possibility on Monday evening, in the most important match between the two for two decades.

La Roja will fancy their chances of emerging victorious; not only can they boast home support, but they have been the outstanding side of the continental showpiece.

With outstanding Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez leading the line, and tactical genius Jose Sampaoli ensuring that he squeezes every drop out of the rest of the team’s resources, the home side may have too much for their opponents.

However, despite being defeated by Brazil in their opening game of the tournament, Peru have demonstrated a superb resiliency and combativeness—not least in a draw with much-fancied Colombia.

They dumped Bolivia out in the quarter-finals, but they may come unstuck against Sampaoli’s Chile, who surely feel it is their destiny to advance to their first Copa America final in almost 30 years.
