20) Wilfried Zaha

A real disappointment considering the hype surrounding the England youngster before his move, Wilfried Zaha barely got on the pitch in a Manchester United shirt and was offloaded swiftly back to his old club Crystal Palace.

19) Radamel Falcao

Only a loan signing, but still one of the worst of the lot at United in recent years, Radamel Falcao managed only four goals for the Red Devils last season, looking way past his best.

18) Alexander Buttner

Only really signed as a squad player, but Dutch left-back Alexander Buttner pretty quickly looked out of his depth as a United player.

17) Luke Shaw

A £30m signing from Southampton, Luke Shaw has certainly not lived up to the fine form he showed at the Saints so far at Old Trafford, looking a big waste of money and well overhyped.

16) Nick Powell

Another young English talent who has failed to deliver with United, Nick Powell has one goal for the club but has barely been seen since.

15) Anders Lindegaard

A backup goalkeeper who has performed well enough when needed, but not a particularly useful signing for the club.

14) Shinji Kagawa

Impressive at Borussia Dortmund, Shinji Kagawa wasn’t really used in his right position at United, but still could have done more to make an impression for the club.

13) Phil Jones

After a bright start, it’s fair to say Phil Jones has not really progressed as hoped for United, though he remains a solid enough squad player.

12) Paul Scholes

Re-signed on a free transfer when deciding to come out of retirement, Paul Scholes did as well as could be expected in his second spell with the club, but certainly wasn’t at his best.

11) Ashley Young

A player improving slowly, Ashley Young struggled for many years at Old Trafford but is now a key player under Louis van Gaal.

10) Angel Di Maria

United’s record signing, Angel Di Maria has not been a total flop, but much more will have been expected of the Argentine, who faded in the second half of last season.

9) Victor Valdes

Snapped up on a free transfer, Victor Valdes looks a smart enough signing for the squad, playing well in his two games, even if he is unlikely to become first choice for the club.

8) Marcos Rojo

A decent defender who can still improve, Marcos Rojo showed some potential in his first season in the Premier League.

7) Marouane Fellaini

Despite a slow start, Marouane Fellaini can now be considered a good signing and important part of the United first-team after a renaissance under Van Gaal’s guidance.

6) Memphis Depay

Despite not yet making an appearance for the club, Memphis Depay is a player full of potential who certainly looks so far like being a good signing for the team, or at least one to be excited about.

5) Daley Blind

A versatile talent who can play equally well at left-back or midfield, Daley Blind had some really good games in his first season at Old Trafford.

4) Ander Herrera

A classy playmaker, Ander Herrera has been exactly what the Red Devils needed in that creative midfield role following his £30m move from Athletic Bilbao.

3) Juan Mata

An ambitious buy from rivals Chelsea, Juan Mata has been excellent for United and well worth the money, even if he could still improve slightly to reach the best form he showed with the Blues.

2) Robin van Persie

Even if his first season was so much better than the subsequent ones, Robin van Persie’s £24m signing from Arsenal has to go down as a success as his 30 goals fired them to the title in his first season.

1) David de Gea

Despite an inconsistent first season, David de Gea’s arrival in 2011 has to go down as the club’s best find in recent years, with the young Spanish goalkeeper now established as one of the best in the world and potentially a club legend if he rejects the advances of Real Madrid this summer.
