Five Man United young stars who need summer loan transfers to realise their potential

With the Dutch coach surely set to turn to the transfer market over the coming months to enforce his squad ahead of both the Premier League season and a return to the Champions League, it remains to be seen what role the Red Devils youngsters will play in his plans.

It may be that, for some of them, a loan move away from Old Trafford would afford an opportunity to play regular first-team football and establish themselves as top-level performers before returning to Manchester to stake a claim for a consistent starting berth under van Gaal.

James Wilson
After a few promising appearances during the first-half of the last campaign, James Wilson faded from the first-team picture at Old Trafford.

Memphis Depay has already arrived, meaning further offensive competition, while van Gaal has been linked with several other big names this summer as he looks to bolster his attack.

This may leave Wilson with no opportunities in Manchester, according to the Daily Star, Everton are keen on bringing the young forward to Goodison Park on a season-long loan deal.

Adnan Januzaj
Another United player who appears to be in the plans of Everton boss Roberto Martinez is Adnan Januzaj.

The Liverpool Echo [via the Express] reported that the Toffees are keeping tabs on the Belgian international and are hoping to sign him on a season-long loan deal.

The forward impressed in his maiden campaign under David Moyes, but only made seven league starts under van Gaal and risks stagnating at Old Trafford.

Tyler Blackett
A third United player who has been linked with a move to Everton is defender Tyler Blackett.

The left-back—who can also feature in the centre—enjoyed something of a break-through campaign last term, making 11 Premier League appearances.

However, he demonstrated his naivety, and United’s quest for defensive reinforcements—the likes of Mats Hummels, Nicolas Otamendi, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane have all been linked to Old Trafford—suggests that van Gaal wants to upgrade his options at the back.

A move to Goodison Park would represent a good ‘next step’ for the 21-year-old, and he could learn a lot alongside the likes of Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines.

Nick Powell
Nick Powell was accompanied by great expectations when he swapped Crewe Alexandra for United in 2012, but is yet to truly demonstrate he can become a fixture in the Premier League.

The England U21 international has spent time on loan at Wigan Athletic and Leicester City, and is understood to be wanted by Nottingham Forest.

However, Dougie Freedman’s side may face competition from newly-promoted Championship outfit, Preston North End.

Jesse Lingard
England U21 international Jesse Lingard spent time last season on loan at Championship side Derby County, and looks set for another temporary move away from Old Trafford this term.

The striker has been linked with a reunion with Steve McClaren—his former Rams boss who has recently taken over at Newcastle United.

A switch to St James’ Park would demand a lot of Lingard, but he has the confidence, the pace and the finishing ability to make a success of himself in the North-East.
