Manchester United hope to make Arsenal transfer target their second signing of the summer next week

This move could well leave the Red Devils short up front, with only captain Wayne Rooney, new boy Memphis Depay and 19-year-old James Wilson left after Radamel Falcao’s loan at Old Trafford ended.

Manager Louis van Gaal will surely be on the lookout for a replacement for the 31-year-old, and here are eight potential stars who could replace the departed ex-Arsenal man.

8) Karim Benzema, Real Madrid

According to talkSPORT, the France international is on the way out of the Bernabeu with new manager Rafa Benitez having made signing Fernando Llorente one of his key summer transfer.

With 22 goals in 47 appearances last season, he could be a massive upgrade on the ageing van Persie.

However, Arsenal are also keen on the France international [Metro].

7) Romelu Lukaku, Everton

Netting 20 times in 48 games for a struggling Toffees side last time round wasn’t a bad effort, and the 22-year-old could be one of the best strikers around for the next decade, even if he was once rejected by Chelsea.

The Metro have linked United to the Belgian’s signature, and the Red Devils could do a lot worst than considering the powerful hitman.

7) Christian Benteke, Aston Villa

Although his £32.5 million release clause may put off the Red Devils according to the Daily Telegraph, the Belgian is still a proven Premier League goalscorer. There aren’t too many of these around, and with the forward keen for a departure [Daily Mail], Louis van Gaal might be confident of sealing a move.

6) Harry Kane, Tottenham

Sky Sports have revealed that the 21-year-old is a target for United after his miraculous 32 goal campaign last time round. However, it may be a risk to sign him before seeing how he does in his second full season at White Hart Lane.

4) Thomas Muller, Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich’s Muller is among the best poachers in the world, and Louis van Gaal has worked with him before while in charge at the Allianz Arena. The Daily Telegraph believe a move may be in the offing.

3) Edinson Cavani, PSG

The forward scored 27 goals in 54 appearances last time round, but still largely plays second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Paris. Man United could take advantage of this, reported the Daily Express.

2) Alexandre Lacazette, Lyon

The 24-year-old top scored in Ligue 1 last season, netting 27 times in 33 games. His club have already signed a replacement, so the way could be clear for the Red Devils according to the Daily Star.

1) Gonzalo Higuain, Napoli

The Serie A side seem keen on keeping the Argentina international, but with the Red Devils having resources to spare, they could still make a move, reported the Daily Express. Liverpool are also interested, according to the International Business Times.
