The 31-year-old’s departure could be just the first of many as manager Louis van Gaal looks to get rid of the deadwood to make room for new signings.

Here are six others who may well follow him out of Old Trafford…

6) Jonny Evans

Could be used as part of a deal for Everton star Seamus Coleman according to the Daily Star. However, even if the Toffees don’t agree to this, the Northern Irishman could well be on his way anyway after failing to impress in 21 games last season.

5) Javier Hernandez

The Daily Star also think that a move from Liverpool for Chicharito is a possibility. The Mexico international was on loan at Real Madrid last time round, but obviously didn’t do enough to change his manager’s mind about using him in the first team.

4) Rafael

Only played 11 times last season and saw Antonio Valencia take his place in the starting XI. This could well be the prelude to the Brazilian being offloaded this summer.

3) Nani

Impressed with Sporting Lisbon last season, especially in the Champions League with four goals in five appearances. However, a £4.25 million deal has been agreed with Fenerbahce according to the BBC, and he could well be joining van Persie there.

2) Angel Di Maria

After only one year the Red Devils are willing to sell the £59.9 million signing for £35 million, reported the Daily Express. Bayern Munich and PSG may pounce.

1) James Wilson

Now this may not be a permanent move away, but it will leave the Red Devils very light in the attacking third. Sending the 19-year-old out on loan despite there potentially being only Wayne Rooney for competition up front seems to be going against the principle of trusting in youth that Sir Alex Ferguson started at Old Trafford. Everton and Hull City are keen according to the Daily Mirror.
